Nintendo NES Classic ‘Battletoads’ Gets 4 Player Co-Operative ROM Hack
From prank phone calls, to notorious rants, and of course nostalgic gameplay, Battletoads is one of the most memorable Nintendo NES games to ever see release. Although the game is anything but a breeze, the addition of co-operative multiplayer gameplay was a stroke of genius from Rare - something ROM hackers have just upgraded by adding in compatibility for up to four players simultaneously.
As ambitious as this new development is, it’s safe to say that the Nintendo NES gets pushed to its absolute limits with the addition of two more toads entering the fray. Although there will be the occasional bit of slowdown, and what appears to be one toad changing colour upon every level (presumably down to a limited palette and a background colour being used instead), this ROM hack offers a whole new experience for retro gamers wanting to host a multiplayer marathon.
While we’re yet to confirm how well the hack runs on the original hardware, if it’s compatible with the Four Score or NES Satellite adapters, or even if the troublesome Turbo Tunnel can be beaten with only two bikes on offer, this is still an incredible feat that deserves a looking.
