Every Record Avengers: Endgame Broke in Its Opening Weekend
by Taylor Williams – on Apr 30, 2019 in CBR Exclusives With Avengers: Endgame destroying pre-release ticket records, it's no surprise the Marvel Studios sequel was on pace for a massive opening weekend at the global box office. The only question was how big it would be. Gargantuan, it turns out. Endgame obliterated the previous record for domestic opening, set in 2018 by Avengers: Infinity War, by nearly $100 million. All the more impressive is the film's worldwide haul. Endgame opened to a staggering $1.224 billion, over $583 million more than Infinity War. With all the weekend receipts counted, we can now take a look at all of the box office records Avengers: Endgame in its first days of release. Continue scrolling to keep reading Biggest Domestic Opening of All Time $357.1 million The earliest projections had Avengers: Endgame on pace for a domestic debut of somewhere between $200 million and $250 million, but as the film drew in record numbers on Thursday and Friday, estimates rose to more than $350 million. By the time the dust settled, however, Endgame had beaten Infinity War's domestic opening of $257.7 million by $99.4 million. Biggest International Opening of All Time $866.5 million Endgame wasn't only drawing audiences in record numbers in the United States and Canada. The previous record holder for an international opening was 2017's The Fate of the Furious, which debuted in 2017 to $443.1 million. Endgame nearly doubled that, outpacing the eighth installment of the Fast and the Furious franchise by $423.4 million. Biggest Worldwide Opening of All Time $1.224 billion Records for both domestic and international opening weekends obviously combine to make for the best worldwide debut. Endgame is now the first film in history to earn more than $1 billion in its worldwide opening, and is now No. 17 (and climbing) on the all-time worldwide box office chart. Largest Thursday Previews $60 million Endgame kicked off its legendary opening weekend with $60 million in Thursday domestic previews, outpacing the previous record holder, 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($57 million). Largest Single-Day Grosses Single-day, opening-day and Friday gross: $157.4 million Saturday gross: $109.3 million Sunday gross: $90.4 million Endgame set multiple records for single-day grosses, topping the charts in single-day, opening-day, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Force Awakens previously held the records for single-day, opening-day and Friday grosses ($119.1 million) while Infinity War held those for Saturday ($82.1 million) and Sunday ($69.2 million). Biggest Opening of All Time in Multiple International Markets Endgame set opening-weekend records in 44 international markets, including China ($330.5 million), the United Kingdom ($53.8 million), Mexico ($33.1 million), Australia ($30.8 million), Germany ($26.9 million), India ($26.7 million), Brazil ($26 million), France ($24.2 million), Italy ($19 million), the Philippines ($17.9 million), Thailand ($14.3 million), Indonesia ($14.1 million), Spain ($13.3 million), Japan ($13 million), Hong Kong ($12.5 million) and Taiwan ($12.3 million). Fastest To Earn $1 Billion Endgame is now the fastest film to gross a billion dollars worldwide, reaching the milestone in just five days. The previous record-holder, 2018's Infinity War, took 11 days. Endgame also set records for the fastest film to reach $100 million, $150 million, $200 million, $250 million, $300 million and $350 million in domestic openings. Endgame crossed the $100 million and $150 million milestones in its first day at the box office, and $200 million and $250 million on its second day. The film passed $300 million and $350 million on its third day at the U.S. box office. Widest Release Endgame set multiple records for widest release, with 4,662 theaters. That's enough to take the top spots for widest release of all time, widest opening release, widest PG-13 release and widest PG-13 opening release. Endgame dethroned Despicable Me 3 as the widest release of all time and widest opening release, and took the top spots for a film rated PG-13 from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Theater Averages Endgame set records for weekend theater average and opening weekend theater average. With Endgame pulling in $357.1 million across 4,662 theaters, the film's theater average total came in at $76,601, surpassing The Force Awakens. Other Notable Records Along with crushing records for domestic, international and worldwide opening weekend, Avengers: Endgame has also set those records for the biggest superhero opening. Other records Endgame now holds include top three-day gross, biggest opening weekend in April, biggest spring opening weekend, biggest PG-13 opening weekend, biggest global 4DX opening (more than $15 million over 635 screens), biggest global 3D opening (more than $540 million) and biggest IMAX opening ($91.5 million).
